You cannot go more than a few blocks anywhere in Oakland without noticing piles of illegal dumping on street corners, under freeway overpasses, and sometimes right in the street.
The City of Oakland has responded to this illegal dumping crisis by urging residents to “report” illegal dumping when they see it, but the City will not fund the needed work teams to respond to the avalanche of reports. In fact, the Oakland City Council cut funds from the FY2017-2018 budget to hire an additional illegal-dumping clean-up crew.
These piles of molding, rotting furniture and waste do not belong in our neighborhoods. We need adequate funding for the necessary number of clean-up crews now more than ever.
